Pouring concrete in a Houston summer is a race against evaporation. Heat and wind pull water from the surface while the slab below is still plastic, which can cause shrinkage cracks and a weak, dusty top layer. We schedule summer pours for early morning, dampen the subgrade before placement, and start curing as soon as the finish allows.

Rain is the other variable. We do not pour on saturated subgrade or with heavy rain in the near forecast, because water on fresh concrete ruins the surface. That sometimes means rescheduling, and we would rather move a day than replace a slab.

A slab is a large, waterproof surface. Every square foot of concrete you add sends rain somewhere else, and on flat Houston lots with shallow street drainage, that somewhere is often the side yard or the neighbor's fence line. We plan where the water goes before we plan the slab.

That might be as simple as pitching a patio toward a lawn that can take the water. The first week decides much of a slab's long-term surface quality. Concrete keeps gaining strength as long as it holds moisture, so we cure every pour with a curing compound or by keeping it damp, depending on the finish and the season. Skipping this step in Houston heat is a common reason for surfaces that dust, craze, or scale within a few years.

Sealer choice follows the finish. A breathable penetrating sealer suits broom and exposed aggregate surfaces and helps resist water, oil, and mildew without changing the look. Stamped and colored work usually gets an acrylic sealer that deepens color and needs renewal every few years. Pool areas and steps get a traction additive in the sealer.

Day to day, concrete asks for little. Keep downspouts and sprinklers from soaking slab edges, clear leaves and pine needles so they do not stain, and reseal joints that open up. If a crack appears with one side higher than the other, call us early, because the cause is almost always water or soil underneath.
