How Stamped Concrete Works
Under the pattern, a stamped slab is built like any other: compacted SubgradeThe native soil beneath a paving or structure after it has been excavated and prepared. Patterns, Colors, and Decorative Concrete Finishes
Popular patterns include ashlar slate, random flagstone, European fan, running bond brick, herringbone, and wood plank. Larger stone patterns look most natural on big patios, while brick and cobble scale down well for walks and borders. Pairing a stamped border with a broom or exposed aggregate field cuts cost and shrinks the area that needs sealer.
For color, earth tones such as sandstone, buff, and light gray stay cooler underfoot and show less fading than deep reds or charcoal. Decorative concrete also includes stained finishes. Why Some Stamped Concrete Fails Early

Can you stamp over my existing concrete?
Not with a traditional stamp, which needs fresh concrete. Existing slabs can sometimes take a stamped overlay or a stain, but only if the slab is sound, level, and draining correctly.
