A concrete walkway in Houston is the path you use every day without thinking about it, until it heaves at a joint, puddles in front of the porch, or cracks around an oak root. We pour walkways that stay flat, shed water to the side, and connect the driveway, front door, side gate, and backyard on routes that make sense for how you move around the property.
Walks are smaller than driveways and patios, but the same rules apply: a compacted base, consistent thickness, joints spaced to the width of the path, and a slight slope so water never sits on the surface. You can keep it simple with a broom finish or dress it up with stamping, color, or exposed aggregate.

When You Need a New Concrete Walkway
Homeowners usually call us about walkways for one of these reasons:
Sometimes the fix is a new route entirely. A walk that curves past the beds to the front door often works better than a straight line from the driveway that cuts across the lawn.
- A front walk that heaved over tree roots and became a trip hazard
- Stepping stones or a dirt path through the side yard that turns to mud after rain
- A walk that holds water at the front steps or porch
- No path at all between the driveway, backyard, trash cans, and side gate
- An old narrow walk that feels out of scale with the house

How a Concrete Walkway Stays Flat
A walkway is a long, narrow slab, which means it bends easily if the soil under one end moves differently than the other. On Expansive clayClay soil that swells when wet and shrinks when dry. Much of the Houston area sits on it, and it affects foundations, paving and drainage design. In practice: Keeping soil moisture around a slab foundation steady, without ponding or bone-dry spells, is part of good drainage design here. that is common, especially where a walk runs from a watered flower bed across a dry stretch of lawn. A compacted base, steel through the length of the walk, and closely spaced joints keep each section small and stable.
Joints on a walk are typically spaced about as far apart as the walk is wide, sometimes a little more, which is why sidewalks look like a row of squares. Each square can move slightly without cracking through the middle. Where a walk meets the driveway, porch, or house, an Expansion jointA gap filled with compressible material that lets slabs or walls expand and contract without cracking or pushing against the house. separates them.
Slope keeps it dry. We give the walk a slight cross slope or lengthwise fall so rain runs off into the lawn or beds, and we avoid shaping it so water collects at the front steps. On flat lots near the street, that may mean adjusting the grade beside the walk too.

Our Concrete Walkway Process
A walkway job is usually quick, but the layout deserves time.
- Route planning: a Home Scout walks the property with you to find the routes people actually take.
- Layout and width: path width, curves, and connections to steps or gates are marked on site.
- Locates and roots: 811 is called and tree roots are identified before digging.
- Excavation and base: soil is cut to depth, base is compacted, and forms are set to slope.
- Steel and pour: rebar runs through the length, and concrete is poured and finished.
- Joints and cure: joints are tooled or cut and the walk is cured.
- Edges and walkthrough: soil and sod are restored along the edges, followed by our 72-hour post-completion walkthrough.

Concrete Walkway Finishes and Widths
A front entry walk is often 4 feet wide or more so two people can walk side by side. Side yard and utility paths can be narrower. Curves soften the look of a straight run and can route around trees and beds.
Broom finish is the most common and grippy choice. Exposed aggregate gives texture and hides dirt. A stamped or colored band along the edges, or a fully stamped concrete walk, adds character at the front door. If the walk changes elevation, outdoor step construction keeps risers consistent and safe.
If you prefer pavers or FlagstoneFlat, irregular or cut slabs of natural stone used for patios, walks and wall caps. for the same path, our walkway paving page covers those options.

Walkway Cost Factors in Houston
Walkways are priced by the job. The main variables:
Walkways are often added to a driveway or patio project, which saves on mobilization. Check our ballpark price tool for a range.

- Removal of old concrete or stepping stones
- Curves, steps, and landings
- Root management near trees
- Finish and decorative borders
- Grade work along the edges

Walkway Problems We Fix
Root heave is the top complaint. When a walk is poured near a live oak with no plan, roots lift one section and crack the next. We route new walks with clearance, use root barrier where it helps, and avoid cutting major roots the tree depends on.
Other common problems: walks with joints so far apart that cracks form between them, walks that sit lower than the lawn and collect water, and thin edges that crumble where a mower wheel or car tire rides over them.

Pairs Well With a New Concrete Walkway
Light the route with landscape lighting installation, border it with flower bed installation, and connect it to a new concrete driveway installation so everything at the front of the house matches in finish and color.

Concrete Walkways Questions
How wide should a front walkway be?
Most front entry walks are 4 feet wide or wider, which lets two people walk side by side and makes the entry feel in proportion to the house. Narrower paths around 3 feet work for side yards and routes to the trash cans or gate. We look at the scale of your house, the porch width, and how the walk meets the driveway before settling on a width.
Can you pour a walkway near a tree?
Yes, with planning. Walks near live oaks and other large trees are prone to root heave, so we keep as much distance as the layout allows, may curve the path around the trunk, and use a root barrier where appropriate. We avoid cutting major structural roots because that can harm the tree. Reinforcement and closer joint spacing help the walk ride out minor root movement.
Do concrete walkways need to be sealed?
A broom finish walk does not need sealer to perform, but a penetrating sealer helps it resist water, stains, and mildew in Houston humidity. Stamped and colored walks should be sealed to protect the color, with resealing every few years. A grit additive in the sealer keeps decorative walks from getting slick in the rain.
How long does a new walkway take?
Most walkways take two to three days on site: one for layout, excavation, and base, one for forms and the pour, and time for joints and cleanup. You can usually walk on it after a day or two. If the walk connects to steps or a new driveway, the schedule follows the larger project.
