    Patio Covers Houston, TX

Solid Roof Extensions Tied Into Your Home's Architecture

Patio covers in Houston turn a hot, rain-exposed slab into a room you can use in July and during an afternoon storm. A solid cover blocks direct sun, keeps furniture dry, and gives you a ceiling for fans and lights, which makes it the most practical shade option for many Houston homes.

It is also the most involved. A cover that attaches to the house has to meet the roof cleanly, carry its own rainwater away, and stay anchored through storm wind. This page explains how we approach those details, what types of covers we build, and what changes the cost. Patio covers are part of our work as a carport and pergola builder in Houston.

Signs You Need a Patio Cover

Most homeowners call when the patio sits empty all summer or when furniture keeps getting soaked. Others want an outdoor kitchen or TV area that needs protection from rain and sun.

A cover is also a fix for a failing one. Old covers often sag, leak at the house connection, or drip onto the slab because they were built without enough slope or a gutter.

    • Your patio is unusable from late morning to evening in summer
    • You want rain protection for furniture, a kitchen, or a TV
    • An existing cover is sagging, leaking, or pulling away from the house
    • Water from the house roof sheets onto the patio during storms

    02

Types of Patio Covers We Build

Solid covers use aluminum roof panels, either single-skin or insulated. Insulated panels have a foam core between two aluminum skins that cuts the heat radiating down onto the patio and dampens rain noise, which is worth considering in Houston summers.

Louvered covers use rotating blades that open for light and close for rain, covered in depth on our louvered pergola installation page. Open-slat structures are rather than covers, and our pergola installation page covers those. Many projects mix types, such as a solid section over the kitchen and open slats over the seating area.

How Patio Covers Attach to Your Home

An attached cover usually fastens to the house along a ledger at the wall or at the fascia and rafter tails. The connection has to land on solid framing, not just trim boards, and it has to be flashed so water running down the wall or roof cannot get behind it.

Slope is the next detail. Solid covers need enough pitch to shed water quickly, and on a single-story home with a low eave there is only so much height to work with. We measure the eave, the door heights, and the slab before choosing the attachment method. On two-story homes, covers often attach to the wall below the second-floor windows.

The other end of the cover sits on posts set on piers or anchored to a slab that can carry them, with anchoring sized for storm wind and lift. Permits are common for attached covers, and we handle the submittal.

Managing Rain Off a Patio Cover

A patio cover is a new roof, and every inch of rain that hits it has to go somewhere. Without a gutter along the low edge, it pours off in a sheet onto the slab or the bed next to your foundation.

We fit a gutter to the cover and run its downspouts into the yard drainage plan, often through a solid pipe to a or the street. If your house gutters are undersized or failing, seamless gutter installation can be done at the same time so the whole roofline works together.

    Our Patio Cover Installation Process

Because covers connect to the house, the early steps are where most of the care goes.

    1. Site visit: a Home Scout checks the roofline, eave height, wall framing, slab, and drainage path.
    2. Design: size, panel type, slope, color, lights, and fans are set, and drawings are prepared.
    3. Approvals: HOA submittal and city permits where required.
    4. : piers poured for posts, or the slab is checked and prepared for anchors.
    5. Frame and roof: posts, beams, ledger, and panels go up, with flashing at the house connection.
    6. Gutter and drainage: the cover gutter and downspouts are tied into pipe or a drain outlet.
    7. Walkthrough: we return 72 hours after completion to check the work with you.

Patio Cover Cost Factors in Houston

The size of the cover and the panel type set the baseline. Insulated panels cost more than single-skin panels, and louvered sections cost more than both.

Beyond that, cost depends on the attachment method and roofline complexity, the number of posts and footings, fans and lighting, gutter and drainage tie-ins, permits, and whether the slab underneath needs replacing. If your existing patio is cracked or sloped toward the house, a patio tear-out and rebuild before the cover goes up is often the better plan. The ballpark price tool gives you an early range.

Why Homeowners Choose Us for Patio Covers

We treat a patio cover as part of the drainage plan, not just shade. One team handles footings, the structure, gutters, and the pipe that carries water away, so nothing falls between trades.

A Home Scout visits every property before a proposal is written, and every proposal is itemized with our price-what-we-quote guarantee. We build with SOLA aluminum structures and install custom-fit 6-inch seamless gutters.

    Patio Covers Questions

Will a patio cover make my house darker inside?

It can, especially over rear windows and doors that face north or east. A cover that extends too far or sits too low blocks daylight into the living room. We look at window placement and may suggest a louvered section near the house to keep light coming in while still shading the patio.

Does a patio cover need its own gutter?

Yes, in Houston almost always. A solid cover collects all the rain that falls on it and sends it off one edge. Without a gutter, that water lands on the slab, splashes furniture, or soaks the bed beside the foundation. We add a gutter and route the downspouts into the yard drainage system.

Can a patio cover attach to a two-story house?

Yes. On two-story homes, covers often attach to the wall between the first and second floors, which gives plenty of height for slope and leaves the upper roof alone. The connection has to reach solid framing and be flashed properly. We check the wall construction during the site visit before committing to the method.

Are insulated patio cover panels worth it?

For most Houston patios, yes. Single-skin aluminum panels get hot in direct sun and radiate that heat onto the space below, and they are louder in rain. Insulated panels have a foam core that keeps the underside cooler and quieter. They cost more, but they make a noticeable difference on a west-facing patio.

Do I need a permit for a patio cover in Houston?

Most attached patio covers need a building permit, and larger freestanding covers often do too. Houston, Bellaire, and West University Place each have their own permit offices and rules, and HOAs usually require approval of the design and colors. We prepare the drawings and handle the submittals as part of the project.
