Louvered Pergola Installation Houston, TX
Adjustable Roofs to Block Sun or Rain on Demand
Louvered PergolaAn open overhead structure of posts and beams that frames a space and supports shade or climbing plants. Smaller cousins include the arbor (an arch over a path or gate) and the trellis (a lattice panel for climbers). installation in Houston gives you a roof that changes with the weather. Open the blades for morning sun and a breeze, angle them against the afternoon glare, and close them when a thunderstorm rolls in at four o'clock. In a city where a clear sky can turn into several inches of rain within the hour, that flexibility is the main reason homeowners choose louvers.
A louvered roof is also a small drainage system. Closed blades collect rain and send it through gutters inside the frame and down the posts, so where that water goes next matters as much as the roof itself. This page covers how louvered roofs work, how we install them, and how we handle the water. It is part of our work as a carport and pergola builder in Houston.

When a Louvered Pergola Makes Sense
Louvers make sense when you want both open sky and rain cover over the same space. They suit outdoor kitchens that need to stay dry, dining areas used year-round, and patios next to rooms you do not want to darken with a solid roof.
If you only want filtered shade, a fixed-slat aluminum pergola installation costs less. If you never want sun overhead, a solid patio cover may be simpler. Louvers sit between the two.
- You want to use the patio in sun and in rain
- An outdoor kitchen or TV area needs cover
- A solid roof would make the inside of the house too dark
- You want to control the amount of shade through the day
02
How a Louvered Roof System Works
The roof is a series of aluminum blades mounted on pivots between two beams. Rotating the blades changes the angle from fully open to fully closed. When closed, the blades overlap or interlock and channel rain to the ends.
From there, water drops into gutters built into the perimeter beams and runs to downspouts, usually hidden inside one or more posts. It exits at the base of those posts. That outlet is where many installs go wrong, because a post that drains onto a patio or into a flower bed creates a new puddle every storm.
Blades are turned by a hand crank or by a motor with a remote or wall switch. Motorized systems may offer options such as rain sensors, depending on the product.

Where the Rainwater Goes
A closed louvered roof can collect a lot of water in a Houston downpour, and all of it comes out at a few posts. We plan those exits before the posts are set.
Our usual approach is to run the post outlets into solid pipe under or beside the patio and carry them to a Area drainA surface inlet with a grate that collects water from a low spot and sends it into an underground pipe., a yard drain, or the street. On new patios we set the pipe before the pour. On existing patios we bring the outlet to the edge and tie in there. Catch basin installation at the right low point keeps the water moving.

04
Our Louvered Pergola Installation Process
Louvered systems need tighter tolerances than fixed pergolas, because the blades must close evenly along their full length.
- Site visit: a Home Scout measures the space, checks the slab or soil, and maps a drainage route for the post outlets.
- Design: size, blade direction, color, motor or crank, lighting, and screens are chosen and drawn.
- Approvals: HOA review and city permits where required.
- FootingThe widened base at the bottom of a wall, column or structure that spreads its load into the ground. and pipe: piers poured and drain lines set to the post locations.
- Frame: posts set plumb and beams leveled precisely, then anchored.
- Louvers and controls: blades installed and adjusted, motor and controls wired and tested.
- Water test and walkthrough: we run water through the gutters, confirm the outlets drain, and return for a 72-hour walkthrough.

Louvered Pergola Options
Most louvered systems come in several powder-coated colors and can be freestanding or attached to the house. Options can include integrated LED lighting, motorized side screens that drop down against low sun or blowing rain, and wiring for fans or heaters.
Louvered roofs are often the centerpiece of a full patio plan. Our outdoor living space design work places the roof, kitchen, seating, and walkways together so each one supports the others.

06
Louvered Pergola Cost Factors in Houston
Louvered roofs cost more than fixed pergolas because of the moving blades, built-in gutters, and controls. Size is the main driver, followed by motorized versus manual operation and the number of posts.
Lighting, side screens, fans or heaters, drainage piping, footings or slab work, permits, and access all add to the total. If the roof is going over a new kitchen, outdoor kitchen construction and the roof are usually planned in the same proposal. The ballpark price tool gives an early range.
07
Caring for Louvers Under Oaks and Pines
Leaves, pine needles, and oak tassels collect in the blades and gutters, so tree cover means a little more care. Open the louvers and rinse them a few times a year, clear the gutter channels, and check that post outlets are flowing after big storms.
Before a named storm, follow the manufacturer's guidance for blade position and secure any loose screens or furniture. Good anchoring and permitted construction do the rest.

Louvered Pergola Installation Questions
Are louvered pergolas waterproof?
When closed, louvered roofs shed rain well and keep the space under them dry in normal storms. They are water resistant rather than sealed like a house roof, so wind-driven rain can still blow in from the sides, and some drips can occur at the edges. Side screens help in exposed spots.
Should I choose a motorized or manual louvered roof?
Manual cranks cost less and work fine on smaller roofs you adjust a few times a day. Motorized systems make sense on larger roofs, roofs over hard-to-reach areas, and for homeowners who want to close the roof quickly when rain starts. Motors need power run to the structure, which we plan during design.
Where does the rain go from a louvered pergola?
Water runs off the closed blades into gutters inside the frame, then down through one or more posts and out at the base. We connect those outlets to solid pipe that carries the water to a catch basin, yard drain, or the street, so it does not pool on the patio or soak the foundation.
Can a louvered pergola handle Houston storms?
A properly anchored louvered pergola handles typical Houston storms well. Strength comes from the footings, anchors, and frame, and permitted structures are checked against local requirements. Before a named storm, follow the manufacturer's guidance for blade position and secure loose items. We size footings and anchoring for the site during design.
