Patio Paver Installation Houston, TX

A paver patio is a strong fit when you want a surface that can move slightly with the soil without cracking, that can be lifted and relaid in one spot if a repair is ever needed, and that comes in more colors and textures than poured concrete. Each paver is a separate unit, so a patio on shifting clay flexes across hundreds of joints instead of breaking along one ugly line.

It is also the right call if your current slab is cracked, settled, or pitched toward the house, or if you plan to add a kitchen, fireplace, or pergolaPergolaAn open overhead structure of posts and beams that frames a space and supports shade or climbing plants. If water stands on the patio after storms now, the new one has to be part of a drainage plan, not a lid over the problem.

A sand-set paver patio is a layered system. From the bottom up: compacted native subgradeSubgradeThe native soil beneath a paving or structure after it has been excavated and prepared. The fabric keeps wet clay from pumping up into the base. The base carries and spreads the load. The bedding sand gives every paver an even seat and is never used to fill low spots, because thick sand shifts.

For foot-traffic patios, the base is typically 4 to 6 inches of crushed stone after compactionCompactionMechanically pressing soil or aggregate to make it dense and stable so it does not settle later., placed in lifts of about 2 to 3 inches and compacted with a plate compactor between lifts. Soft or wet soils, hot tubs, and masonry kitchens call for more. On some patios we use Gator Base, a high-density panel system rated for pedestrian use, which reduces excavation depth and spoil in tight backyards.

Slope is built into the base, not the sand. We set the surface to fall away from the house, commonly around 1/8 to 1/4 inch per foot, toward a lawn edge, swaleSwaleA shallow, gently sloped channel in the ground, often grassed, that guides surface water toward an outlet. In practice: Side-yard swales between houses are common on Houston lots and are easily blocked by fences, beds or fill., or drain inlet. On flat Houston lots that water has to land somewhere useful, so we plan the outlet before we plan the patio.

Every patio follows the same sequence, and every step is done by our own crew.

Pattern matters for performance. Herringbone interlocks best and resists creep. Running bond and stack bond look modern but lean harder on the edge restraint. Large-format slabs need an especially flat base, since a high spot makes a big unit rock.

Lighter colors stay noticeably cooler underfoot in August than charcoal blends. Permeable pavers are available, but on dense clay they usually need an underdrain pipe.

The failure we tear out most often is a patio laid on 2 or 3 inches of sand with little or no compacted base. It looks fine for a season, then the clay swells, the sand migrates, and pavers start rocking. Next is a missing edge restraint, or a plastic one never spiked down, so the field creeps outward and joints open. Third is slope that runs toward the house because the installer followed the existing grade.

Smaller shortcuts show up as polymeric sand haze, ants and weeds in half-filled joints, and low spots that hold a puddle after every storm. If your existing pavers are sound but faded and sandy, paver sealing may be all they need.

If the yard already holds water, plan a French drain installation with the patio, since trenching before the base goes in is far easier than after. Many clients add outdoor kitchen construction on a reinforced pad inside the paver field, or border the patio with seat walls in stone masonry.
