The clearest sign is a worn line in the grass. If everyone already cuts across the lawn from the driveway to the door, or from the patio to the detached garage, that is where a walk belongs. Muddy shoes, stepping stones that have sunk out of sight, and a narrow builder walk that two people cannot pass on are other common reasons.

Safety matters too. Lifted joints from tree roots, slick algae on a shaded north side, and walks that turn into a stream during a storm are all reasons to rebuild rather than live with it. A new entry walk is also one of the most visible upgrades in curb appeal landscaping.

A walkway carries far less load than a driveway, but it faces the same clay. Water management is the part people overlook. A walk should cross-slope slightly so rain sheds off one side, and it should not act as a dam that traps water between the house and the yard. On flat Houston lots, a walk running parallel to the foundation needs to fall away from the house, and sometimes needs a small drain or gap where it crosses a swaleSwaleA shallow, gently sloped channel in the ground, often grassed, that guides surface water toward an outlet. Tree roots are a constant issue in older neighborhoods. We route walks around root zones where we can and use a flexible surface like pavers or flagstone near large live oaks, so future root growth can be handled by resetting units instead of breaking concrete.

Walkways move quickly, but the order of work stays the same:

Broom finished concrete is clean, affordable and quick, and it can be stamped or finished with exposed aggregate for more texture. Width changes how a walk feels. A main entry walk wide enough for two people side by side reads as welcoming, while a garden path can be narrower. Where the grade drops between the house and the yard, matching outdoor steps keep each riser even and safe.

Walkway cost follows length and width first, then material. A straight concrete path costs less than a curving paver walk with borders. Steps, landings, removal of an old walk, root work around trees, and drainage tie-ins add to the scope.

The most common: stepping stones laid on bare soil that have tilted and sunk, a concrete walk with no joints that cracked across every few feet, and paver paths with no edge restraint where the outer rows have wandered into the bed. We also see walks set too high, holding water against the slab, and walks pitched toward the foundation.

Green, slick surfaces in shady side yards are usually a drainage and finish problem, not just a cleaning problem. A rougher texture and a better slope keep them drier.
