    Brick Patio Installation Houston, TX

Classic Brick Paving with Proper Jointing

Brick patio installation in Houston gives you a surface with real history behind it. Brick has paved courtyards and garden walks in this city for well over a century, and done right it weathers into a warm, even patina. Done wrong, it heaves, grows moss in every joint, and flakes apart where soft brick soaks up water.

Texas Urban Elements builds new and reclaimed brick patios for homes in West University Place, Bellaire, Memorial, and across the Houston metro. This page covers how to choose a brick that will hold up, the two ways brick can be set, and the questions to ask any installer before you sign.

Pavers. Individual paving units laid in a pattern. Joint sand and an edge restraint hold them tight, so the surface can flex slightly without cracking.

When a Brick Patio Makes Sense

Brick suits homes with brick facades, traditional architecture, and older neighborhoods where concrete pavers can look out of place. It pairs well with live oaks, boxwood hedges, and established beds. Because brick is fired clay, its color runs all the way through the unit and does not fade in Texas sun the way some dyed products can.

Brick is a weaker choice for very modern homes, for areas that need large flat slabs under furniture, or where budget is the main driver. In those cases a concrete paver patio or a concrete patio construction project may serve you better. We will tell you honestly which fits your house and your goals.

    02

Choosing Brick That Survives Houston Weather

Not every brick belongs on the ground. Wall brick is made to stand vertically and shed water. Paving brick is fired harder, denser, and less absorbent so it can lie flat in and take foot traffic. For patios we use brick that meets ASTM C902, the standard for pedestrian and light traffic paving brick, or C1272 where heavier use is expected. Face brick laid flat on a patio is the main reason Houston brick patios flake and powder at the surface, a failure called spalling.

Reclaimed brick adds character, but it needs sorting. Old street pavers are dense and excellent. Old soft-fired building brick is not. We inspect reclaimed loads, reject soft or cracked units, and plan for extra waste. New brick pavers come in consistent sizes, commonly about 4 by 8 inches and around 2 1/4 inches thick, which lays flatter and faster.

    03

    Sand-Set Versus Mortar-Set Brick Patios

A sand-set brick patio is built like a paver patio: excavated and compacted , geotextile fabric, a compacted , about an inch of bedding sand, the brick, joint sand, and a rigid . It flexes with the clay, sheds some water through the joints, and can be lifted and relaid in one spot if needed.

A mortar-set brick patio lays brick in a mortar bed on a reinforced concrete slab, with mortar joints between units. It gives a crisp, formal look and keeps joints free of weeds. The slab has to meet the same standard as any patio slab, with rebar, proper pitch, and , and the brick layout should carry a flexible sealant joint directly above each slab joint. Otherwise the slab cracks and the crack shows straight through the brick.

On , sand-set brick is usually the more forgiving system. Mortar-set brick makes sense for steps, borders, pool edges, and small formal areas over a solid slab.

    Our Brick Patio Installation Process

Brick is less forgiving of shortcuts than most surfaces, so we follow a set order on every job.

    1. Site visit by a Home Scout to check grade, drainage, tree roots, and how the patio meets the house
    2. Brick selection with samples on site, including reclaimed options and border colors
    3. Pattern and layout design with a grade plan that sends water away from the foundation
    4. 811 utility locate, HOA submittal, and city permit review where required
    5. Excavation, subgrade , fabric, and base in compacted lifts, or a reinforced slab poured for mortar-set work
    6. Brick laid in pattern with a soldier course border, cut with a wet saw for clean edges
    7. Joints filled with polymeric sand or mortar and tooled, followed by a full cleanup
    8. Final review with you, then our 72-hour post-completion walkthrough

    Brick Patterns and Details

Herringbone is the strongest pattern for sand-set brick, because each unit locks against its neighbors in two directions. Basketweave gives a classic courtyard look and works well in smaller spaces. Running bond is simple and draws the eye down a long, narrow area. A soldier course, brick laid end to end around the perimeter, finishes the edge and gives the restraint a straight line to hold.

Small details matter with brick. A step-down threshold at the back door keeps rain from sheeting toward the house. Brick around a tree should leave the root flare and a generous opening, because live oak roots will lift anything set too close. Where the patio meets lawn, a slightly raised edge keeps St. Augustine runners from creeping into the joints.

Brick Patio Cost Factors in Houston

The price of a brick patio moves with several variables beyond square footage. Our ballpark price tool is a good first look. The itemized proposal written after the site visit is what we build to, with no surprise charges.

    • New paving brick versus reclaimed brick, plus the sorting and waste reclaimed brick needs
    • Sand-set on an aggregate base versus mortar-set on a reinforced slab
    • Pattern choice, with herringbone and basketweave requiring more cuts
    • Removal of an existing patio or slab
    • Drainage features such as or a surface water drainage tie-in
    • Steps, borders, and transitions to doors, walks, and driveways

    07

Common Brick Patio Failures We Repair

We regularly pull up brick patios built with wall brick that has spalled and powdered within a few years. We also see brick laid on bare dirt or a thin sand bed that has rolled into waves as the clay moved, and mortar-set brick on a slab with no control joints, where one long crack now runs through brick and mortar alike.

Moss and algae are a Houston constant under shade trees, and they are far worse on brick that stays wet because the patio is flat or pitched the wrong way. Correcting slope and drainage does more than any cleaner. For mortar joints that have cracked out or brick faces streaked with white salts, see our masonry repair service.

    Brick Patio Installation Questions

Is brick or concrete paver better for a Houston patio?

Both perform well when built on a proper base. Clay brick holds its color permanently and suits traditional homes. Concrete pavers come in more shapes, sizes, and textures, and are made to tighter tolerances, which helps with large modern layouts. The deciding factors are usually the style of your house, the look you want, and budget, not durability.

Can I use old bricks from my house for a patio?

Possibly, but most house brick is wall brick, made to stand upright and shed water. Laid flat, it absorbs water and tends to flake apart over time. Hard, dense units can work, especially in low-traffic borders. We inspect the brick and tell you which pieces are suitable. Salvaged brick is often better used for edging, a planter, or a column cap.

How do I keep moss off a brick patio in Houston?

Moss grows where brick stays damp and shaded. The lasting fix is to make the patio dry out faster: correct slope so water leaves the surface, thin overhanging branches where you can, and keep sprinklers from spraying the brick. For cleanup, a stiff brush and a cleaner suited to masonry work better than high-pressure washing, which can erode joints.

Should a brick patio be sealed?

Sealing is optional. A breathable penetrating sealer can reduce staining and slow moss growth, and it helps lock in joint sand. Glossy film-forming sealers can trap moisture under the surface in our humidity and turn cloudy. If you seal, wait until the patio has dried out fully after installation and any efflorescence has been cleaned off.

Can you put brick over my existing concrete patio?

If the slab is sound, pitched away from the house, and the added height works at the door, brick can be mortar-set over it, with sealant joints placed over the slab's existing joints. If the slab is cracked or settled, those problems will come through the brick. We check the slab during the site visit and recommend overlay or replacement based on what we find.
