    Brick Paver Driveway Houston, TX

    Durable and Classic Brick Driveways

A brick paver driveway in Houston gives you a surface with real character: warm color that does not fade, a classic pattern that suits older homes in Bellaire, West University Place and older streets inside the loop, and a pavement that can be lifted and relaid instead of broken out. It is also one of the most demanding surfaces to build correctly, because every unit has to stay put under turning tires.

This page is specific to brick and brick look driveways. We cover the difference between fired clay brick and concrete pavers made to look like brick, which patterns hold up to vehicles, how thick the units and base need to be, and how we keep a brick drive tight and level on for the long term.

    What's under it · tap a layer

Pavers. Individual paving units laid in a pattern. Joint sand and an edge restraint hold them tight, so the surface can flex slightly without cracking.

A paver patio in section: the pavers you walk on, and the bedding, base and fabric that keep them flat on Houston clay.

    01

Is a Brick Paver Driveway Right for Your Home?

Brick suits traditional, colonial, Tudor and craftsman homes, and it pairs naturally with a brick facade. It also makes sense when you want a driveway that ages gracefully rather than looking worn, or when you have a circular drive or motor court where a slab would need a lot of joints anyway.

It is less suited to a tight budget or a long rural drive. For those, concrete or asphalt usually fits better, and our driveway paving page compares the options side by side.

    02

Clay Brick vs Concrete Brick Look Pavers

True clay brick pavers are fired in a kiln. The color goes all the way through the unit, so it holds up to Houston sun and does not wear off at the tire tracks. Clay pavers are dense and hard, and they keep crisp edges for decades when set on a stable base.

Concrete pavers made in brick shapes and colors are the other route. They are consistent in size, come in a wide range of blends, and are typically more economical. Quality manufactured units, like the Belgard products we install, use color and finish methods meant to resist fading. Either option can work on a driveway when it is installed as an interlocking system.

    03

How Brick Driveways Carry Vehicle Loads

A car turning its wheels in place twists the pavers beneath the tire. That rotational force is what pulls a poorly built brick drive apart. Three things resist it: a thicker paver, a herringbone pattern and a solid edge.

Driveway units are typically thicker than patio units, commonly around 80 millimeters, because a thicker brick has more joint face to lock against its neighbors. A herringbone pattern, laid at 45 or 90 degrees to the direction of travel, interlocks in every direction, so tires cannot push rows along. Running bond, the classic wall pattern, looks great on a walk but tends to creep under cars unless the joints run across the direction of travel.

Below the units, the compacted for a driveway is deeper than for a patio, and on soft Houston clay we add geotextile fabric to keep the base clean. The bedding layer stays thin and even, because a thick bedding layer is where tire ruts start.

    Our Brick Paver Driveway Process

We build brick drives in a fixed sequence:

    1. Survey grades from the garage slab to the street and plan where water exits.
    2. Remove the old drive or sod and excavate to driveway depth.
    3. Install fabric, then place and compact base in lifts with a plate compactor or roller.
    4. Set a concrete or rigid , especially along the lawn and at the street.
    5. Screed the bedding layer and lay the field in herringbone from a string line.
    6. Lay a soldier or sailor course border to frame the field.
    7. Compact, fill joints with polymeric sand, compact again and activate.

    05

    Brick Driveway Cost Factors

Brick drives cost more than standard concrete because of material and labor per square foot. The main variables are clay versus concrete brick, the size and shape of the drive, the number of cuts at curves and borders, base depth, demolition of an existing drive, and any drainage added at the apron.

Circular drives and motor courts involve many angled cuts. Inlays, contrasting borders and banding add detail and labor. Our ballpark price tool gives a first range, and financing is available for qualifying projects.

    Common Failures in Brick Driveways

We see brick drives where the installer used patio thickness units, laid them in running bond along the direction of travel, and set them on sand. Within a couple of years the tire paths sink and the rows walk toward the street. Another common one is a border mortared to a thin concrete curb that cracks and lets the field spread.

Older brick drives often have plain sand joints that have washed out and filled with weeds. In many cases the bricks can be salvaged, cleaned and relaid on a new base, which keeps the original character.

    07

Pairs Well With a Brick Paver Driveway

A matching entry walk or front porch landing ties the whole facade together, and a brick patio installation in the back carries the look through the property. Once the drive has settled in, cleaning and paver sealing deepen the color and help hold the joint sand.

    Brick Paver Driveway Questions

Do brick paver driveways last in Houston?

Yes, when they are built as a driveway and not as a patio. That means driveway thickness units, a herringbone pattern, a deep compacted base with fabric on soft clay, a rigid edge restraint and polymeric joint sand. Brick itself is extremely durable. Failures almost always come from the base and the pattern, not the brick.

What pattern is best for a brick driveway?

Herringbone, laid at 45 or 90 degrees, is the standard for driveways because it interlocks in every direction and resists the twisting force of turning tires. A soldier course border around the edge frames the field and helps hold it. Basket weave and running bond are better kept to walks and patios.

Can old brick pavers be reused on a new base?

Often they can. Sound clay bricks can be lifted, cleaned and relaid on a rebuilt base, which keeps the look of an older home and avoids buying new material. Cracked or badly spalled units are replaced with the closest match available. We evaluate the brick during the site visit.

Is a brick paver driveway more expensive than concrete?

Generally yes, because of the material and the labor of laying and cutting each unit. Over time the gap can narrow, since a brick drive can be repaired by resetting a section instead of replacing whole slabs. The size, pattern and base depth of your drive determine the real difference.
