Driveway replacement in Houston is the right move when the old driveway has failed in too many places to patch. The slab is cracked into pieces, panels have heaved and dropped, the apron is lower than the street gutter, or water runs back toward the garage every time it storms. At that point you are not fixing a surface; you are fixing the ground under it, and that means starting over.
This page covers the full tear-out and rebuild: deciding whether replacement is really needed, breaking out and hauling the old surface, finding out why it failed, rebuilding the base, and pouring or laying a new driveway in concrete or pavers. It also covers what to expect with permits, timing and living without your driveway for a stretch.

Concrete slab. The poured slab, reinforced and cut with control joints so the cracks concrete always makes form in straight, planned lines.
01
Signs It Is Time for Driveway Replacement
Look for cracking in many directions, sometimes called map or alligator cracking, rather than a few straight lines. Look for panels that tilt in different directions, trip edges at the joints, and areas where the soil has washed out from under the slab edge so you can slide a hand underneath.
Grade problems are another trigger. If the driveway sends water toward the garage or traps it in the middle, no coating will fix that. Very old driveways poured without reinforcement on bare clay also tend to fail all at once. When the damage is limited to a few spots, driveway resurfacing and repair are worth considering first.
02
Why Old Driveways Fail Under Houston Conditions
Most failed driveways we tear out share a few traits: little or no base, wire mesh lying on the dirt instead of rebar held up in the slab, too few Control jointA groove cut or tooled into concrete so that cracks, which are expected, form in a straight, planned line., and grade set by eye. Over years of shrink and swell, the clay underneath moves unevenly and the slab breaks along its weakest lines.
Water accelerates all of it. Downspouts dumping beside the drive, a leaking irrigation line, or a yard that drains across the slab soften the clay in one area and let it settle. Tree roots lift slabs nearby. Replacement is the chance to deal with every one of those causes while the ground is open.

Our Driveway Replacement Process
Replacement adds demolition and diagnosis to the front of a normal build:
- Site visit to measure, shoot grades and identify why the existing driveway failed.
- Itemized proposal covering demolition, base, drainage, surface and any permit work.
- Permits and HOA approvals, plus 811 locates before breaking concrete.
- Break out the old slab with equipment sized for your access, and haul it off for disposal or recycling.
- Remove soft or contaminated SubgradeThe native soil beneath a paving or structure after it has been excavated and prepared. In practice: Houston clay subgrades move with moisture changes, which is why base preparation and drainage underneath matter., regrade to the new slope, and fix the cause of the old failure.
- Place and compact new base in lifts, then install drainage at the apron or low points as planned.
- Build the new surface: reinforced concrete with planned joints, or pavers with a rigid edge and polymeric sand.
- Restore turf and beds along the edges and walk the finished drive with you.

04
Replacement Material Choices
Most homeowners replace concrete with concrete, but it is worth considering the switch. A new slab built through our concrete driveway installation standards with rebar on chairs and correct joint spacing will behave very differently from the one you are tearing out. Stamped or exposed aggregate finishes can change the look without changing the material.
Pavers are a common upgrade at replacement time. A brick paver driveway or concrete paver drive tolerates clay movement and is repairable in sections. Since the old slab is coming out anyway, the extra excavation for a paver base is a smaller step than it would be on its own.
05
Driveway Replacement Cost in Houston
Replacement costs more than a new driveway on open ground because of demolition, hauling and the base repairs found once the old slab is up. The main factors are square footage, slab thickness or paver type, how much of the subgrade has to be removed and replaced, drainage additions, access for equipment, and permit requirements at the street.
Apron and sidewalk work in the public right of way often has specific rules about thickness and joint layout, which can affect cost. Start with our ballpark price tool, and ask about financing for larger projects.

06
Replacement Mistakes That Repeat the Old Problem
The worst outcome is a new driveway that fails the same way as the old one. That happens when a crew breaks out the slab and pours the new one on the same disturbed clay, with the same downspout still discharging at the edge and the same grade sending water to the garage.
We also see new slabs poured to the old elevations even though the lot has settled, leaving the apron lower than the street gutter. Shooting grades and correcting them during replacement is the whole point of starting over.
07
Work to Include With a Driveway Replacement
With the slab out, it is the ideal time to run drain pipe under the driveway path, set a catch basin installation at a low corner, or carry downspout lines to the street. Regrading the side yards through excavation and grading helps the new drive shed water correctly.
You can also widen while you rebuild, rather than adding on later. As a paving contractor in Houston, we plan the new layout, drainage and surface together.

Driveway Replacement Questions
How long does driveway replacement take?
Demolition, base work and the new surface typically take one to two weeks on site for a residential driveway, depending on size, weather and inspections. A new concrete driveway then needs to cure before cars go on it, commonly about a week. Paver driveways can usually be used as soon as they are finished. We plan parking alternatives with you before demolition.
Should I replace my driveway or just resurface it?
Replace it when cracking and settlement are widespread, the slope sends water toward the house, or the base has failed in many places. Resurface or repair when the slab is mostly sound and damage is limited to the surface or a few panels. A site visit that checks grades and the base underneath gives you a clear answer.
Do I need a permit to replace a driveway in Houston?
Work that touches the public right of way, such as the apron, curb cut or city sidewalk, typically requires a permit, and rules differ between the City of Houston, Bellaire and West University Place. Many HOAs also require approval for material or layout changes. We confirm the requirements for your address during the site visit.
What happens to the old concrete?
We break it out with equipment sized for your access and haul it away. Broken concrete is commonly taken to recycling yards where it can be crushed for reuse as base material. Disposal and hauling are listed in your itemized proposal so there are no surprises.
