A new driveway makes sense when you are starting from dirt, from gravel, or from a layout that no longer works. Think of a Cypress or Tomball lot with only a builder pad, or a Memorial remodel with a new garage location.

It also makes sense when you want the driveway designed together with the yard. If you are already regrading, adding drainage, or planning a front walk and beds, pouring or laying the driveway as part of one plan gets the elevations right the first time. Most of the Houston area sits on Beaumont and Lake Charles clay, soils with a high shrink-swell rating. When they take on water they expand and push up; when they dry they shrink and pull away. A driveway placed straight on that clay rides every one of those cycles, which is why you see slabs that crack along a line and lift at one corner.

The fix is a stable layer between the clay and the surface. For vehicle traffic the base is typically deeper than for a patio, and the exact depth depends on how soft the clay is and how heavy the vehicles are.

Slope is the other half. A driveway should carry water off its surface and away from the garage slab, usually by falling toward the street or toward a drain set at the low point. Every driveway follows the same order of work, whatever the material.

Poured concrete is the most common Houston driveway. It is clean and durable, and it can be finished as broom, exposed aggregate or stamped. Interlocking concrete pavers and clay brick give you a segmented surface that flexes with the ground instead of cracking, and any damaged unit can be lifted and reset. A brick paver driveway is a strong choice for older neighborhoods and traditional architecture.

Two driveways with the same square footage can price very differently. The biggest factors are size and shape, the material and finish, how deep the base needs to be for your soil and vehicles, how much grading and drainage the site needs, access for equipment and trucks, and whether there is an old surface to break out and haul away.

The most common problem on a newer Houston driveway is a thin or skipped base. A slab poured on wet clay, or pavers set on a couple of inches of sand, will move within the first few seasons. The second is grade: a driveway that sends water back toward the garage door or into the side yard, because nobody shot elevations before forming.

A driveway project is the right time to fix how water moves across the front of the property. If the yard needs reshaping first, excavation and grading sets the slopes that the driveway and lawn both depend on. A matching front walk, an entry landing, or new beds along the drive edge usually cost less when they are built in the same mobilization.
