Asphalt paving in Houston makes the most sense on longer drives and larger areas: a private road to a home on acreage in Tomball or Richmond, a shared drive between properties, a parking area for a home business or church lot, or a long residential driveway where a concrete slab would cost far more. Asphalt goes down quickly, can carry traffic within days, and is repaired and resurfaced without demolition.
It also has real limits in the Gulf Coast heat. This page explains how an asphalt pavement is built, what it needs to hold up on clay through a Houston summer, how it compares with concrete and pavers, and what our process looks like from base to final roll.

When Asphalt Paving Is the Right Choice
Asphalt fits projects where cost per square foot, area and speed matter more than decorative finish. Long rural or semi rural drives, gravel roads that are being upgraded, turnarounds, and small commercial parking areas are typical. It is also a good choice when the driveway will see heavy equipment occasionally and you want something that can be patched rather than sawn out.
For a short suburban driveway in front of a brick home, concrete or pavers usually suit the architecture and HOA rules better. Our driveway paving page compares those options for typical residential lots.

How an Asphalt Pavement Is Built
An asphalt driveway is a flexible pavement. Unlike a concrete slab, it does not span weak spots; it relies completely on the base to carry the load. That makes the base work below it the most important part of the project on Expansive clayClay soil that swells when wet and shrinks when dry. Much of the Houston area sits on it, and it affects foundations, paving and drainage design. In practice: Keeping soil moisture around a slab foundation steady, without ponding or bone-dry spells, is part of good drainage design here..
We prepare and proof the SubgradeThe native soil beneath a paving or structure after it has been excavated and prepared. In practice: Houston clay subgrades move with moisture changes, which is why base preparation and drainage underneath matter., correct soft areas, and place crushed Base courseThe layer of compacted crushed stone or road base placed over the subgrade to support paving. CompactionMechanically pressing soil or aggregate to make it dense and stable so it does not settle later.. Hot mix asphalt is then placed and compacted with a roller while it is still at working temperature. Residential drives commonly receive a couple of inches or more of compacted asphalt, with heavier sections where trucks or equipment will run.
Drainage is built into the shape. Asphalt drives are crowned or cross sloped so water sheds off the surface, and the edges need support from compacted shoulders, because an unsupported asphalt edge crumbles under tires. On rural lots, culverts at roadside ditches and grading of the shoulders are part of the job, often with excavation and grading done first.

Our Asphalt Paving Process
Each asphalt project follows this sequence:
- Site visit to measure, check drainage paths, ditches and culverts, and confirm truck and paver access.
- Itemized proposal covering base, asphalt thickness, drainage and any removal of existing surfaces.
- Locates through 811, then clearing, excavation and subgrade correction.
- Aggregate base placed, graded to the crown or cross slope, and compacted in lifts.
- Hot mix asphalt placed and rolled at the right temperature for full compaction.
- Edges shaped and shoulders backfilled and compacted to support the pavement.
- Final walkthrough and guidance on when to drive, park and seal.

Asphalt vs Concrete in the Houston Heat
Asphalt is dark and absorbs heat, so on a July afternoon it softens slightly. Sharp turns with the wheels locked, kickstands, trailer jacks and lawn chairs can leave marks, especially in the first season. Concrete stays harder and cooler but costs more per square foot and can crack if the base moves.
Over time, asphalt oxidizes in UV and turns gray and brittle, and gas and oil drips soften it. Regular sealcoating and crack filling slow both processes. Concrete needs less routine care but is harder to repair invisibly.
05
Asphalt Paving Cost Factors
Asphalt cost is driven by area, base depth, asphalt thickness, the condition of the subgrade, drainage needs such as culverts and ditch grading, and removal of existing gravel or old pavement. Mobilizing a paver and roller has a fixed cost, so very small jobs cost more per square foot.
Asphalt prices also move with oil prices, so the mix cost can change between seasons. The ballpark price tool gives a first range, and larger projects may qualify for financing.
06
Why Some Asphalt Drives Fail Early
Most early failures trace back to thin asphalt placed over gravel that was never regraded or compacted, so the surface follows every rut below. Others come from no crown, leaving water sitting on the surface and seeping into the base, or edges with no shoulder support that break off within months.
Asphalt placed too cold or rolled too late never reaches full density and ravels, losing stone from the surface. Getting these steps right on day one is far cheaper than overlaying a failed surface later.
Heavy rain exposes every one of these shortcuts. When several inches fall in an hour and water has no crown to shed from, it finds the weakest edge and undercuts it. We see the results after every tropical storm season: broken shoulders, potholes where water sat, and soft base along the low side of the drive.

Pairs Well With Asphalt Paving
Large asphalt areas move a lot of water. On acreage, land drainage installation and SwaleA shallow, gently sloped channel in the ground, often grassed, that guides surface water toward an outlet. In practice: Side-yard swales between houses are common on Houston lots and are easily blocked by fences, beds or fill. keep runoff from washing out shoulders and pooling at the house. For homes adding parking alongside a paved drive, a driveway extension can be done in matching asphalt.
Our paving contractor in Houston overview covers the concrete and paver options for areas closer to the house.

Asphalt Paving Questions
Is asphalt a good driveway choice in Houston?
It can be, especially for long drives, acreage properties and parking areas where cost and speed matter. Asphalt handles small soil movement and is easy to patch and resurface. It softens in summer heat and needs periodic sealcoating. For short suburban drives, concrete or pavers often suit the home and HOA rules better.
How soon can I drive on new asphalt?
Light vehicle traffic is usually fine after a few days once the asphalt has cooled and hardened, though cooler weather allows it sooner and summer heat may call for more time. Avoid sharp turns in place, heavy trucks and parking in the same spot for the first weeks, since fresh asphalt is still curing and can scuff.
How thick should an asphalt driveway be?
Residential drives commonly receive a couple of inches or more of compacted hot mix over a compacted aggregate base, with thicker sections where trucks or equipment travel. The base depth is just as important, and on soft Houston clay it often needs more depth than people expect. We set both after seeing the soil and the expected traffic.
Can you pave asphalt over an existing gravel driveway?
Sometimes the existing gravel can become part of the base, but only after it is regraded, supplemented with fresh aggregate and compacted to the right shape. Paving straight over loose or rutted gravel copies those ruts into the new surface. We assess the gravel during the site visit.
