When Custom Stone Work Fits Your Project
Custom work is the answer when a standard patio, wall, or column does not solve the space. Maybe the yard drops a foot between the back door and the lawn. Maybe a corner of the garden needs a focal point. Maybe you want to reuse stone already on the property or match an existing feature. These are design problems as much as construction problems.

How Custom Stone Features Are Set in Houston Soil
Each feature type is set differently. Stone steps sit on a compacted Base courseThe layer of compacted crushed stone or road base placed over the subgrade to support paving. or a concrete FootingThe widened base at the bottom of a wall, column or structure that spreads its load into the ground. depending on their height, with consistent risers, usually 6 to 7 inches, and treads deep enough for a full foot, usually 12 inches or more. Flagstone stepping paths are set on a compacted base with a sand or fine gravel setting bed so no stone rocks underfoot. Boulders are buried a third or more of their height so they look like part of the ground rather than something dropped on it. Freestanding accent walls get a reinforced footing like any masonry wall, because clay movement will rack a wall that only sits on a shallow pad.
Where stone meets planting beds, we leave a path for water. Dry-stacked borders let water pass between stones. Mortared borders get weep gaps or a gravel strip behind them so beds do not become bathtubs after a Houston downpour.

Stone Types for One-Off Features
Flagstone, typically sandstone or limestone split into flat slabs, works for steps, paths, and caps. Oklahoma and Arizona flagstone are common in Houston yards for their reds, browns, and buffs. Cut limestone blocks make clean steps and benches. Weathered boulders and moss rock suit naturalistic beds and water edges. Problems With DIY and Low-Bid Stone Features
Stone steps with uneven risers, stepping stones set on bare dirt that sink and tip within a season, and boulders sitting on top of the soil like they fell off a truck are the most common things we redo. We also see stone borders mortared tight against beds with no way for water to escape, which keeps roots soaked and kills shrubs.
Mortared flagstone laid over an old cracked slab is another. The flagstone cracks along the same lines within a year or two. A custom piece should solve a problem in the yard, not create a new one.

How tall should outdoor stone steps be?
Most comfortable outdoor steps have risers of about 6 to 7 inches and treads of 12 inches or deeper, often deeper than indoor stairs for a relaxed pace. The most important rule is consistency: every riser in a run should match, because a single odd step is what trips people. Local code may apply to steps serving a door, so we check before building.
Can you reuse stone I already have?
Often, yes. Stone from an old border, a demolished wall, or a previous owner's project can become steps, edging, or a feature wall. We look at its condition, size, and quantity during the site visit and supplement with matching stone if needed. Reusing stone can save material cost, though cleaning and sorting it adds some labor.
Do stepping stones need a base?
Yes. Stepping stones set on bare soil sink, tip, and get buried by lawn within a season or two, especially in clay that swells and shrinks. A compacted gravel base with a thin sand or fine gravel setting bed keeps each stone level and lets water drain out from underneath. Setting the tops just above grade also makes mowing easier.
What is the difference between custom stone work and stone masonry?
Stone masonry covers built structures with a core and a stone face, such as columns, veneered walls, seat walls, and planters. Custom stone work covers one-off pieces like steps, borders, boulders, benches, stepping paths, and fountain surrounds, many of which are set stone rather than mortared walls. Many projects include both, and one team builds them together.
Will stone features hurt my tree roots?
They can if placed carelessly. Heavy footings and deep excavation inside a live oak's root zone can damage the tree. We keep footings away from major roots, use shallow set stone or boulders near trees, and leave space around the trunk flare. If a feature must go near a valuable tree, we plan the layout around the roots before any digging.
