Water featureAny designed use of water for sight or sound: fountains, pools, runnels, waterfalls or bubbling urns. installation in Houston adds sound and movement to a patio or garden, and it softens the hum of traffic and air conditioners that fills most backyards. A well-built fountain or pondless waterfall runs quietly for years. A poorly built one leaks, grows algae, breeds mosquitoes, or overflows into the lawn during the first big storm. The difference is almost entirely in the planning and the parts you cannot see.
Texas Urban Elements designs water features into the patio or garden plan as part of our Houston landscape design services, then builds them with the same crew handling the hardscape, planting, and drainage around them. That way the feature looks like it belongs, and the plumbing and power are planned before the surface goes down.

Is a Water Feature Right for Your Yard?
A water feature is a good fit if you want a focal point you can hear from the patio, a way to mask street noise, or a reason for birds to visit. It is also worth considering when:
- You have a patio corner or bed that needs a centerpiece
- You want water without the upkeep of a fish pond
- Small children are around and you want water with no open pool
- An old pond leaks, smells, or has become a mosquito source
- You are already planning a patio or garden and want power and plumbing roughed in

How Water Feature Installation Works
Most residential features we build are recirculating. A pump sits in a hidden basin or vault, pushes water up to the outlet, and the water falls back into the basin to be pumped again. Pondless waterfalls and bubbling urns work this way, which means no standing open water, far less algae, and nothing for mosquitoes to breed in as long as the water keeps moving.
The basin is the key part. It is excavated, lined with protective underlayment and a flexible liner or a rigid reservoir, and filled with stone or covered with a grate so the water is out of sight. The pump vault allows easy access for cleaning. An auto-fill valve can top off evaporation, which is significant in a Houston summer.
Houston rain changes the details. A basin set in a low spot will fill with runoff and spill over, so we place features on higher ground or give the basin a planned overflow tied to a drain line. Power for the pump comes from a GFCI-protected outdoor outlet, coordinated with a licensed electrician and permitted where required. Utility locates through 811 happen before digging.

Our Water Feature Installation Process
We plan the feature with its surroundings, never as a drop-in kit. A Home Scout visits every property before a proposal is written.
- Free discovery call about the sound, size, and look you want
- On-site consultation to choose a location with good sightlines from the house, check grade and drainage, and find the nearest power. The $150 work scope fee is credited to the project if you move forward
- Design drawings showing the basin, outlet, stone or vessel selection, and planting around it, with optional 3D renderings for a $497 upgrade credited toward the build
- Itemized written proposal, priced exactly as quoted
- Excavation, liner and basin installation, plumbing, and finish stone by our crew
- Startup and flow adjustment, followed by a 72-hour post-completion walkthrough

Types of Water Features and Materials
Bubbling urns and drilled stone columns suit patios and small gardens, giving a gentle sound in a compact footprint. Pondless waterfalls and streams use boulders and river rock to create a natural run down a slight grade, built up with soil where Houston's flat lots lack a natural slope. Wall fountains and spillways can be built into a seat wall or stone masonry feature for a more formal look.
Pump size controls sound. A low flow gives a soft trickle near a bedroom window, and a higher flow gives a fuller splash that covers road noise. A submersible light makes the feature a nighttime focal point, especially as part of a landscape lighting design.
05
Water Feature Cost Factors in Houston
Cost depends on feature type and size, the amount of stone or the vessel chosen, basin size, pump capacity, distance to power, lighting, and how much excavation and grading the site needs. A feature built into a new patio or seat wall can share labor with the hardscape, while a retrofit into a finished yard means more restoration.

Water Feature Problems We Fix
The repairs we see most often come down to a few causes: liners punctured by roots or rocks because no underlayment was used, basins too small so the pump runs dry in summer, features set in a low spot that floods and washes MulchA layer of organic or mineral material spread over soil to hold moisture, moderate soil temperature and suppress weeds. In practice: In heavy rain, light mulch can float and wash onto paving. Placement and edging should account for water flow. into the water, extension cords run across the lawn to power a pump, and open ponds with still water breeding mosquitoes. A properly sized recirculating system with planned overflow and permanent power prevents all of them.

Water Features That Fit Your Patio and Garden
Water features work best when they are drawn into the larger plan. A bubbler often anchors one corner in patio design, and a pondless stream fits naturally into garden design with plants softening the stone. If your yard already holds water after storms, drainage design and planning should come first so the feature is not fighting runoff.
Texas Urban Elements handles drainage, masonry, planting, and the feature itself with one team. We are NDS Certified drainage specialists and a Belgard Authorized Contractor, and we have served Houston and its surrounding communities since 2016.
Water Feature Installation Questions
Do backyard water features attract mosquitoes in Houston?
Moving water does not give mosquitoes the still surface they need to breed, so a recirculating fountain or pondless waterfall that runs regularly is not a problem. Issues come from open ponds with stagnant areas or features left off for long stretches. Pondless designs keep the reservoir underground and out of reach, which helps further.
How much maintenance does a pondless water feature need?
Less than a pond. Expect to clear leaves and debris from the stone, check the water level during hot, dry weeks unless you have an auto-fill valve, and clean the pump intake a few times a year. Oak leaves and pine needles in Houston yards add to cleanup in spring and fall. There are no fish or open water to manage.
Does a water feature need its own electrical outlet?
The pump needs a dedicated, GFCI-protected outdoor outlet near the feature, ideally on a circuit that can also feed a submersible light. Extension cords across the yard are unsafe and not a permanent solution. New outlets and circuits are coordinated with a licensed electrician and permitted where required.
Will a water feature overflow during heavy rain?
It can if the basin sits in a low area or has no planned overflow. We place features on higher ground when possible, shape the surrounding grade so yard runoff goes around rather than into the basin, and add an overflow outlet tied to a drain line where needed. That keeps the feature from flooding during Houston downpours.
Can a water feature be added to an existing patio?
Yes. Bubbling urns and small fountains can sit at the edge of an existing patio or in an adjacent bed, with power run to a nearby outlet. Larger features like spillways in a seat wall are easier to include during a new build. We look at your current layout and recommend the option with the least disruption.
