    Artificial Turf Installation Houston, TX

Low-Maintenance Turf with Proper Subsurface Drainage

Artificial turf installation in Houston is mostly about what you cannot see. The turf itself is the easy part. The base under it, the way it drains during a three-inch-an-hour downpour, and how its edges are secured decide whether it looks like a lawn for years or turns into a lumpy, smelly mat that holds puddles.

We build synthetic turf like a hardscape: excavate, set a compacted decomposed granite or with the right pitch, and make sure water that falls on the turf has somewhere to go. It is a strong solution for shaded yards where grass will not grow, dog runs, play areas, and side yards that turn to mud, as long as it is installed for Houston rain and heat.

Artificial turf. Synthetic turf with drainage holes, so rain passes straight down into the base.

When Artificial Turf Is the Right Call

Turf earns its place where real grass keeps failing. Dense shade under live oaks, narrow side yards with no airflow, and heavy dog traffic all wear out St. Augustine faster than it can recover. If you are reseeding or resodding the same area every year, turf usually pays for itself in time and frustration.

It is also popular for kid play zones, areas around pools where mud gets tracked in, and small urban backyards in Bellaire, West University Place, and the Heights, where every square foot gets used. Where turf is not ideal is a hot, unshaded area you expect to walk on barefoot at 3 p.m. in July. Synthetic fibers heat up in direct sun, and we will tell you that before you buy.

    02

How Artificial Turf Installation Works on Houston Soil

Turf is porous. Its backing is perforated or fully permeable, so rain passes straight through. That water then has to move through the base and away from the area. On , which barely absorbs water, the base cannot rely on soaking into the ground. It has to be pitched so water flows laterally to a lower edge, a drain, or a .

We excavate the existing soil several inches down, lay a geotextile or weed barrier, then place decomposed granite or crushed limestone base and compact it in lifts with a plate compactor. The finished base is graded with a gentle fall, the same way a patio is. Where the yard is flat or enclosed by fences and slabs, a drain line or surface water drainage tie-in carries water out.

    Our Artificial Turf Installation Process

A clean install follows a fixed order. Each layer is checked before the next one goes on.

    1. Site visit to measure the area, check sun and shade, and see where water flows now
    2. Removal of existing grass, roots, and organic soil
    3. Grading the and adding drainage where the area cannot shed water on its own
    4. Weed barrier or geotextile laid over the subgrade
    5. Decomposed granite or crushed stone base placed and , then screeded smooth
    6. installed along beds and borders where the turf needs a firm edge
    7. Turf rolled out with grain running the same direction, seams joined with seam tape and adhesive
    8. Perimeter secured with landscape spikes, infill spread and brushed in, final grooming

    Turf Products, Infill, and Options

Turf varies by pile height, blade shape, density, and backing. Shorter, denser turf stands up better to dogs and play. Taller blades look more like a natural lawn. Look for a fully permeable backing in pet areas so urine flushes through instead of pooling on the surface.

Infill holds the blades upright, protects the backing from UV, and adds weight. Silica sand is the standard. Coated sand options resist bacteria, and zeolite infill helps control pet odors. Some products advertise cooler surface temperatures. They help a little, but shade and occasional rinsing make a bigger difference in Houston summers.

Artificial Turf Cost Factors in Houston

Square footage and turf grade set the starting point. Removal of existing lawn and soil, base depth, and haul-off add to it. Areas that need added drainage or a pipe to the street cost more than yards that already slope well.

Access is a real factor, since base material and turf rolls are heavy and narrow gates slow everything down. Complex shapes with many curves create more seams and more waste. Pet-specific infill and edging also change the number. Our ballpark price tool gives you a working range, and financing is available for qualifying projects.

    Artificial Turf Problems We Correct

The worst installs we see were laid over dirt with a thin skim of sand. Within a season the clay shifts, the surface goes wavy, and puddles form after every storm. Turf laid flat between a slab and a fence with no fall stays wet and starts to smell, especially in dog areas.

We also fix visible seams where grain directions do not match, edges that lift after heavy wind, and turf installed against the foundation in a way that traps water at the slab. In most cases the fix is pulling the turf, rebuilding the base, and relaying it properly.

    07

What Pairs Well With Artificial Turf

Turf often sits next to a patio, so it pairs naturally with patio paver installation and a clean border where the two meet. Planting beds around it soften the look, which is where flower bed installation helps. If you love golf, a putting green installation uses the same base work with a different surface.

Turf can also be part of a whole-yard plan through our Houston landscaping services, mixing real lawn where it thrives and synthetic where it does not.

    Artificial Turf Installation Questions

Does artificial turf drain well in Houston rain?

It drains well when the base is built for it. The turf backing lets water through quickly, but the base below has to move that water away. On Houston clay that means a compacted aggregate base with a slight slope and, on flat or enclosed lots, a drain line. Turf laid over packed dirt will puddle and stay wet no matter how permeable the product is.

How hot does artificial turf get in Texas summers?

In direct afternoon sun, synthetic turf can get much hotter than natural grass and uncomfortable for bare feet and paws. Lighter-colored products and cooling infills help a bit. The most effective strategies are placing turf where it gets afternoon shade, rinsing it before use on hot days, and choosing it for shaded areas where real grass struggles anyway.

Is artificial turf good for dogs?

Yes, if it is installed for pets. Use a fully permeable backing, a well-draining base, and an odor-control infill such as zeolite. Rinse high-use areas regularly and pick up solid waste promptly. A shorter, denser pile holds up best to digging and running. Avoid laying pet turf flat against a slab with no slope.

How long does artificial turf last?

Lifespan depends on product quality, UV exposure, and traffic. A quality turf on a properly built base typically lasts many years in residential use. Houston sun is hard on fibers, so UV-stabilized products matter. Base failures, not worn blades, are the most common reason turf is replaced early, which is why base work gets most of our attention.
