Block Retaining Walls Houston, TX

Block is our default recommendation when a wall has to do structural work: holding a driveway edge, supporting a raised patio or pool deck, or retaining more than a couple of feet of soil. The units are uniform, so the wall goes up true, and the system has a known way to add strength through geogrid.

It also suits homeowners who want a clean, modern line or a specific color that matches pavers elsewhere on the property. Because Belgard makes both wall block and pavers, matching a wall to a patio is straightforward.

A segmental retaining wall is a gravity wall with help. Each block has a lip or pin system that sets it slightly behind the course below, creating a built-in setback. The weight of the block, the setback, and the gravel filling the cores and the zone behind the wall all resist the soil pressure.

When the wall gets taller or carries weight above it, gravity alone is not enough. Geogrid, a high-strength polymer mesh, is laid between courses and rolled back into the backfill at set intervals. As the backfill is compacted over it, the grid locks the soil and the wall together into one mass. The length and spacing of each layer come from the manufacturer's charts or stamped plans from a licensed P.E. when required.

On Houston clay, drainage is what keeps that system working. Washed gravel fills the block cores and a zone behind the wall, a perforated pipe at the base carries water out, and filter fabric separates the gravel from the native clay so it does not clog.

Segmental walls are only as straight as the first course, so most of the care goes into the bottom of the wall.

The block itself is only part of the cost. On a taller wall, excavation, geogrid, gravel, and compaction time can match or exceed the price of the units on the pallet.

Height is the biggest factor, because it decides whether geogrid is needed and how deep the trench goes. After that come total wall length, the block line you choose, corners and steps, how far the drain pipe has to run, equipment access, and whether an old wall has to come out first. Most failed block walls we see were built with landscape-store blocks meant for edging, stacked to a height they were never designed for. Without grid, a 4 foot wall of small units will rotate forward as the clay behind it swells.

Other common shortcuts are skipping the gravel in the cores, compacting backfill in one deep pass instead of thin lifts, cutting geogrid short to fit a narrow yard, and setting fence posts through the grid after the fact.
